Wider Curriculum Offer - Response to School Closures
September 2022
BHPS Curriculum Implementation
Re-design of the The Baguley Hall Curriculum began in 2018/19 and initial implementation in the Autumn term of 2019 20. In March 2020 the first national lockdown commenced. Although as a school we remained open for the majority of our pupils (key worker and vulnerable) throughout the lockdown, teaching staff worked from home on a rota basis and optimum use was made of this opportunity to create detailed curriculum plans for each subject area.
Whilst we had begun to deliver our redesigned curriculum, because of the ongoing disruption of Covid during the academic year 2021 22 and the significant need for additional targeted teaching and Catch Up interventions to redress the impact of school disruption on English and Maths, our scheme of work was not delivered precisely as set out at this time. In KS2 some units were delivered over fewer sessions, with some aspects missed, and in KS1 they may have been explored during an enrichment day which provided the stimulus for ongoing work in English.
Additionally, as our new curriculum is a progression from what was in place before, our older children (Y4/5/6) have not experienced the earlier stages of this curriculum pre-covid either.
This is reflected in our 5 year development plan where it states:
Except where this is not practical (eg children with high levels of SEND): By the third year of this plan all children are accessing the full BHPS scheme of work.
Our ongoing cycle of curriculum deep dives and internal and external coaching support for subject leaders will ensure that momentum is maintained in driving towards this objective and our COAP (curriculum on a page) documents will be updated to support colleagues to understand which aspects of each curriculum area have not been taught.
From September 2022, our curriculum schemes of work are being implemented as intended with adjustments to compensate previous learning missed.
All teaching begins with an exploration of what children know and remember and this is our starting point.
